Rise from academia to policy-making

Rise from academia to policy-making

Ms. Daman Singh referred to her father Dr. Manmohan Singh’s modest upbringing in Gah, a village in present-day Pakistan before Partition uprooted his family and the role played by his teachers and guides in his academic journey. Despite economic hardships, Dr. Singh’s relentless pursuit of education led him to Cambridge and later Oxford, where he honed his skills as an economist. Daman beautifully chronicled his rise from academia to policymaking, showcasing how his work ethic and dedication shaped his life and career.

Ms Daman Singh further emphasised that Panjab University was not only an academic starting point for Dr. Singh but, various scholarships he received from time to time were instrumental in his journey, making higher education accessible despite his modest background.

In her address, Ms. Daman Singh shared personal anecdotes and cherished memories, offering a heartfelt glimpse into the private world of one of India’s most respected statesmen. The public lecture provided a rare and intimate perspective on Dr. Singh’s life, legacy, and values. The lecture was very well received and appreciated.

This marked the second day of Daman Singh and Raghav Tankha’s visit to the university campus.

Later in the evening, Daman Singh and Raghav Tankha visited the Department of Economics, the alma mater of Dr. Manmohan Singh, to interact with faculty members, research scholars and students of the department. She spent a considerable amount of time in the official room of Dr. Manmohan Singh, which displayed several of his books and photographs, offering a glimpse into his academic life and lasting legacy at the university.

Awareness and Screening Programs by the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh on World Liver Day – 2025

*Awareness and Screening Programs by the Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh on World Liver Day – 2025*

World Liver Day is observed on 19th April every year. This all started in the year 2010 when European Association for Study of the Liver (EASL) decided to mark this day as the World Liver Day which was the day of the founding of EASL in the year 1966. The day marks an occasion to enlighten the public about the risk and causes of liver disease, its prevention, including diet and lifestyle modification and the available treatment modalities.
Typically, most of the chronic liver disease (CLD) patients do not have any specific symptoms in the initial stage of CLD and requires screening and surveillance as per their risk factors, said *Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Duseja, Head of Dept of Hepatology, PGIMER Chandigarh*. He said that three common causes of CLD seen in PGI are alcohol related liver disease (ALD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD- fatty liver disease) and chronic viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C Viruses). The department of Hepatology has always been in the forefront in organizing various public awareness and screening and surveillance activities. Transient elastography is a non-invasive modality to screen for liver fat and fibrosis (scarring) and in the past, the department has organized elastography and viral hepatitis screening activities for PGI employees, said Dr Sunil Taneja, Additional Professor, Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. There are certain high-risk groups for liver disease and amongst many such groups, those who abuse alcohol and inject drugs are very common high-risk groups. On this world liver day, we plan to screen such patients for the presence of liver disease, said Dr Duseja. He said that, in collaboration with department of Psychiatry, patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and persons who inject drugs (PWIDs) attending the drug de-addiction and treatment centre (DDTC) at PGI will be coordinated with the department of Hepatology to screen for presence of hepatitis B and C infections and will also undergo elastography of the liver to look for liver fat and fibrosis (scarring). This activity though will start on the occasion of world liver day but will continue for next few weeks till enough of such patients have been screened, said Dr Duseja.
Every year the World Liver Day comes with a theme and this year’s theme is ‘Food is Medicine’. The theme is relevant as there is close relationship between food we consume and the risk of liver disease said Dr Madhumita Premkumar, Additional Professor, Department of Hepatology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. She said that food does affect the gut bacteria, which are related to the occurrence of liver disease through gut-liver axis and changing the gut health. Both quantity and quality of the food are related to the liver health by causing malnutrition including over-nutrition and under-nutrition both of which increases the risk of liver disease, said Dr Nipun Verma, Additional Professor, Dept of Hepatology PGIMER Chandigarh. Overnutrition, typically causes overweight and obesity and the risk of other metabolic diseases like diabetes (blood sugar), hypertension (high BP), dyslipidemia (abnormal blood lipids) and put these patients at risk of developing fatty liver disease said Dr Arka De, Associate Professor, Dept of Hepatology PGIMER Chandigarh. Thus, for a good health, it is very important to have a balanced quantity and quality of food. Diet consisting of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables and moderate intake of dairy and carbohydrates and restricted sugar and fat intake (particularly saturated and trans fats) is considered a healthy diet for healthy liver, said Dr Naveen Bhagat, Assistant Professor, Dept of Hepatology PGIMER Chandigarh.
Most of the diseases of the liver including the three common liver diseases (ALD, fatty liver and viral hepatitis) are related to the unhealthy lifestyle and thus making people aware of a healthy lifestyle goes a long way for a healthy liver said Dr Sunil Taneja. There is a large burden of liver diseases globally and in India and there are not enough hepatologists (liver doctors) in the country to look after these patients with liver disease said Dr Madhumita Premkumar. Following the principle of “Prevention is better than cure’ and making efforts to prevent these diseases is thus a better strategy rather than trying to cure a large number of such patients said Dr Nipun Verma. In this direction, Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) has formed a taskforce on ‘Preventive Hepatology’ with an aim to make all sections of society aware about the preventive measures of common liver diseases, said Dr Duseja who is the national Secretary-General of INASL. He said that it is good to catch them young and thus making children and adolescents aware of preventive measures may be more fruitful. In its maiden attempt, INASL- Taskforce on Preventive Hepatology and department of Hepatology, PGIMER Chandigarh organized a ‘Liver Health Awareness Program’ in Delhi Public School, Chandigarh on 17th April, 2025. In the program, Mrs Reema Dewan, The Director of DPS, Chandigarh and Mohali thanked INASL and the department of Hepatology for this awareness program which was addressed to the children of class 10-12 of the school. Dr Duseja, who is also the chairperson of this national taskforce explained the children about this initiative and the need of such program. Dr Ajeet Bhadoria, Additional Professor, Dept of Community and Family Medicine, AIIMS, Rishikesh who is also the convener of the taskforce spoke about the causes, routes of transmission and preventive measures for viral hepatitis predominantly focusing on hepatitis A and B virus. Dr Arka De, Associate Professor, Dept of Hepatology PGIMER Chandigarh spoke about the causes and preventive measures for fatty liver disease covering both alcohol related fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and also covering the theme of world liver day i.e. ‘Food is Medicine’. Even though good quality and quantity of food is so important for good liver health, in certain areas accessibility and affordability to good quality food may be a challenge, said Dr Naveen Bhagat, Assistant Professor, Dept of Hepatology PGIMER Chandigarh. The awareness program was attended by around 500 persons including the students, teachers and staff of DPS, Chandigarh.
The department of Hepatology will continue to organize such awareness and screening programs for the better liver health of the community.

You might feel a strong urge to organize your life, improve your well-being, and be more efficient in your work. This is a good time to implement new healthy habits and streamline your daily tasks. However, with Mercury retrograde influencing this area, be mindful of details and potential errors in your work. Communication with colleagues might require extra clarity. Pay attention to your health and listen to your body's signals. Prioritizing your well-being through a balanced diet and mindful movement will be beneficial.

Your creativity, romance, and self-expression are highlighted today, Sagittarius, as the Sun moves into your fifth house. A younger family member might seek your advice or emotional support. Focus on creating a peaceful and harmonious home environment.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18):

Communication, learning, and your immediate environment take center stage for you today, Aquarius, as the Sun moves into your third house. You might feel more curious, communicative, and eager to connect with those around you, especially siblings and neighbors. Short trips and intellectual pursuits could be favored. However, with Mercury retrograde in this active sector, be extra careful with your words and ensure clear communication to avoid misunderstandings. Travel plans might face minor delays or changes. This is a good time for collaborative learning and sharing ideas, but double-check all information and messages.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah addresses 75th Foundation Day celebration of the Gujarati weekly ‘Chitralekha’ in Mumbai

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah addresses 75th Foundation Day celebration of the Gujarati weekly ‘Chitralekha’ in Mumbai

The journey of 'Chitralekha' over the last 75 years is a reflection of Gujarat's literature, society, life and the problems of Gujarat and the country

When there is purity of purpose than mere consideration of profit, dedication towards literature and a desire to solve the problems of society, only then one can connect with the readers

An awakened weekly has a deep impact on our society and life

During many movements in Gujarat, when the society was falling apart, 'Chitralekha' took the torch in its hands to keep the society united

Gujarati literature's magazines and newspapers played a big role in the building of the country

Nagin Das, Tarak Mehta and Gunwant Shah became popular from the platform of 'Chitralekha', the President honoured all three with Padma awards

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today addressed the 75th Foundation Day celebration of the Gujarati weekly ‘Chitralekha’ in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. On this occasion, several distinguished dignitaries were present, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal, and State Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde among others.

While addressing the event, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah said that the 75-year journey of ‘Chitralekha’ has been a mirror of Gujarati literature, society, lifestyle, and the issues faced by Gujarat and the nation. He said that in my life so far, I have changed three houses, the furniture in those houses, even the addresses — but ‘Chitralekha’ has continued to arrive faithfully at all three homes.

Shri Amit Shah said that the way 'Chitralekha' has maintained its connection with the readers is rarely seen. This is possible only when there is purity of purpose than mere consideration of profit, dedication towards literature and the desire to solve the problems of the society. He said that ever since I learned to read, I have been reading 'Chitralekha'. He shared sometimes while reading Harkishan Mehta's novel, sometimes Tarak Mehta's Ulta Chashma and sometimes while reading the cartoon published on the front page, I did not know when I started getting the urge to read the issues of the society and try to find their solution.

Union Home Minister said that an awakened weekly impacts our society and life in many ways. In the English speaking era when it was difficult to keep Gujarati literature alive, Vajubhai founded 'Chitralekha'. Today, there is a greater need than ever to fearlessly represent all the problems of the society and not only question the problem but also to give suggestions for its solution. He said that at the time of Anamat movement in Gujarat, the society was disintegrating, but at that time 'Chitralekha' had taken the torch in its hands to keep the society united. It is because of its fact-based efforts of 75 years that 'Chitralekha' has gained credibility.

Shri Amit Shah said that literature cannot progress without the support of society. Literature is the need of society. Gujarati literature magazines have played a very important role in the development of the country. Gujarati Sahitya Parishad started a magazine named 'Budhi Prakash' in 1855. At that time, everyone started a front against customs with the inspiration of 'Budhi Prakash'. In the year 1876, Nanalal started 'Satya Vihar' and spread amazing awareness in the society. Mahatma Gandhi started 'Navjeevan' in 1919 and worked to serve the bitterest truth to the people. In the year 1950, after India gained independence, ‘Chitralekha’ was launched, and since then, it has played a significant role in presenting both societal issues and literature with great precision and clarity to the people.

Union Home Minister said that a successful effort was made to keep the society united through the novels published in 'Chitralekha'. This inspired the youth studying Gujarati to study. He said, very few of you would have met Tarak Mehta in person. Even the saddest person in the world cannot stay without laughing if he goes to meet him. Spontaneous humor was a gift from God to him. He ran 'Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah' from the same chawl for years. Those who watch the serial would find it very beautiful, but those who have read Tarak Mehta would understand what these people have done to the Tarak Mehta series. He used to make entire Gujarat forget all its sorrows in four pages.

Shri Amit Shah said that 'Chitralekha' gave many such special issues which can never be forgotten. Its Narmada Yojana special issue had shaken the whole of Gujarat. He said that no one would have given such an accurate and true presentation of the 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai as 'Chitralekha' did. It gave such a presentation that widespread awareness spread about the problem of terrorism.

Union Home Minister said that 'Chitralekha' also published three special issues on the issue of Ram Mandir. He said that he has been a supporter of Ram Mandir since childhood, fought for it and even went to jail, but no one has presented it as beautifully as 'Chitralekha'. He said that Nagin Das, Tarak Mehta and Gunwant Shah became popular from the platform of 'Chitralekha' and finally the President of India honoured them with the Padma Award. Hardly any magazine in the country has produced three writers honoured with the Padma Award.
