Drug menace needs to be dealt with a ‘holistic approach’ for which the Haryana Government is taking affirmative measures. For this, the State Government will be increasing the number of drug de-addiction centres, presently 12, and soon every district will have such centres with adequate staff.
Haryana Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Sh. Rajeev Arora said this during a seminar on ‘Preventing Drug Abuse’ held on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as the Chief Guest here today after lighting the traditional lamp.
Commissioner of Police, Dr. Hanif Qureshi welcomed the Chief Guest, speakers and other dignitaries to the seminar.
Sh. Arora shared that the Chief Minister, Sh. Manohar Lal and Home Minister, Sh. Anil Vij are closely monitoring the steps being taken to control the drug menace. He added that the State Government is already working to devise a mechanism so as to curtail the drug menace under the guidance of Chief Minister and Home Minister. He further said that the government departments like the Home, Health, Social Justice need to work along with print and electronic media and civil society so as to curtail the penetration of drugs among the youth of the society. Sh. Arora said that Haryana Narcotic Control Bureau has also been constituted by the State Government to break the supply chain of drugs and nab the drugs peddlers.
He elaborated that the drug menace can be curtailed through multi-pronged approach as a drug-addict also needs psychological and emotional support post de-addiction.
Stating that the entire process of de-addiction needs concerted efforts Sh. Arora said that the government officials and officers should be more committed for this cause so that we get the desired outcome.
Emphasising on the role of NGOs and civil society Sh. Arora said that ultimately the NGOs and society have a pivotal role to play in this regard. Stating that the youth must be dissuaded from drug use than falling prey to peer pressure he added that more awareness should be spread about the issue and the news related to such cases should also be dealt with sensitively.
Commissioner of Police, Dr. Hanif Qureshi said that drug addiction affects the youth as well as the economy of the country. Emphasizing on the need to spread awareness among the people to eliminate drugs, he said that Panchkula Police has been working to curb the drug menace and in the special drive conducted, the police has registered FIRs and made numerous arrests. Apart from this, the police is engaged in spreading awareness through street plays in schools, colleges as well as markets and other public places.
Among the speakers were Technical Director, Social Justice & Empowerment Department’, Dr. Aditya Kaushik, Advocate Prateek Gupta, senior advocate, Sh. Atul Lakhanpal, Project Director Mehar Foundation, Dr. Abhimanyu Rampal, Dr Manoj and Head of Department of Medico Psycho Social Intervention, Panjab University, Dr Gaurav Gaur.
The seminar ended with a vote of thanks by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sh. Surinder Pal Singh.
