Saves lives of 3 terminally ill organ failure patients
With the donation of Liver & Kidneys at PGIMER
09 November, 2022 :
Following the footsteps of other 33 brave-heart families this year, the benevolent family of deceased Ram Saran gave the greatest gift anyone can give – the ‘gift of life’ to 3 terminally ill organ failure patients through the selfless and generous act of organ donation of their dear one, 53 year old deceased Ram Saran from village Sarthali, Anandpur Sahib, district Ropar, Punjab here at PGIMER.
Paying rich tributes to the donor family, Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER stated, “One develops a different level of respect for the donor families like this one of donor Ram Saran, who sustain the hope in others by making it possible through their courageous decisions of organ donation braving their own tragedy.”
“With incessant efforts of PGIMER team involved in the process, the momentum for Organ Donation certainly seems to be building up gradually. Though slow, but we hope to inch closer to bridging the donor-recipient gap,” added Prof. Lal.
The day of 3rd November started like any other usual day for Ram Saran and his family as he went off for his routine morning walk. However, the destiny had something else in store for him on that day as suddenly, some speeding two wheeler hit Ram Saran brutally from behind, making him unconscious. Immediately, Ram Saran was rushed to a nearby civil hospital, from where he was referred to PGIMER by the attending doctors, seeing him unresponsive to the treatment.
Ram Saran was brought to PGIMER in an extremely critical condition on 3rd November itself and was being treated in the Neuro-Surgery department of PGIMER. May be the time of Ram Saran’s mortal existence was over as he could not be retrieved from his critical condition despite the best of the efforts by the treating team and was declared brain dead on 5th November after two meetings of the Brain Death Certification Committee following the protocols of THOA.
Detailing about the case, Prof. Vipin Koushal, Medical Superintendent, PGIMER & Nodal Officer, ROTTO (North) shared, “After the declaration of the brain death of Ram Saran, the transplant coordinators approached the family to consider the option of organ donation. Following their consent, the donor was operated to harvest Liver and kidneys, which on transplantation helped, saving lives of three patients suffering from end-stage organ failure, thereby, giving them second lease of life and sustaining the hope for many more in-waiting recipients through their self-less gesture.”
Kashmiro Devi, the brave heart wife of donor Ram Saran, still trying to come to terms with the dark reality, shared, “My husband was a ‘giving’ and kind person. He did things for others because it made him feel good. There was always something special on his face and in his eyes as he would tell us of his experience of helping someone. Even in his death, he has done what he lived for by selflessly saving the lives of many others. He will continue to live amongst us through them.”
While putting up a brave face amid their own grief of losing their father, Gurpreet Singh and Charan jeet Singh, the courageous sons of donor Ram Saran, shared their sentiments, “We did not know anything about organ donation. But once we understood that our decision can help saving many lives, we decided to go ahead. The only thought in our minds was that our decision may turn lucky for someone else and they get more time to spend with their dear one.”
The chances of all the three recipients’ suffering debilitating liver failure and kidney ailments for long were zero – without a transplant. “My family member got that chance today with a liver transplant at PGIMER as a result of the brave decision made by the family of donor Ram Saran. Any amount of thanks can never be enough to thank the donor family,” stated relative of recipient outside the operation theatre, echoing the emotions of all the three recipients here at PGIMER. .
