National Health Mission (Punjab) Mission Director Mr Tej Partap Singh Phoolka (IAS) today launched the Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight (IDCF)-2022 at a state-level event in District Hospital here. IDCF program is being implemented from 4th July to 17th July, 2022 across the state. The goal of IDCF is to attain zero child deaths due to childhood diarrhea in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Phoolka said that the drive will cover around 33 lakh children under 5 years of age across the state, who will be given ORS packets and Zinc tablets. He said that almost all the deaths due to diarrhea can be averted by administering the right quantity of Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) and doses of zinc tablets along with adequate nutritional intake by the child. Mr. Phoolka solicited the support of the public to achieve the goal of Zero Death due to diarrhea in the state. He said that ORS and zinc corners have been set up in all the government health facilities across the state and health workers will hold demonstrations on how to prepare ORS solutions.
Director Health and Family Welfare Dr Ranjit Singh Ghotra said that during the campaign, health workers will reach every household and sensitize the people on the treatment and preventive measures to control diarrhea besides distributing the IEC material. He said that diarrhea, which is one of the most common illnesses among children, can be prevented by increasing access to safe drinking water, improving sanitation and hygiene, breastfeeding for at least six months, hand-washing and appropriate nutrition. Intensified community awareness activities on the necessity of maintaining hygiene and promotion of ORS and zinc therapy for the treatment of the disease will be conducted at district and village levels during the campaign.
Amongst present on the occasion were Civil Surgeon Dr Adarshpal Kaur, Deputy Director Dr. Nisha Sahi, Assistant Director Dr Vaneet Nagpal, State Program Officer Dr Inderdeep Kaur, District Immunization Officer Dr Girish Dogra, Senior Medical Officer Dr Vijay Bhagat, Dr HS Cheema, State Mass Media Officer Mr Jagtar Singh and other health officials and staff.
