Launches skill training programme for women Safaimitras, waste collectors & toilet cleaners

First batch of 40 women Safai mitras launched

 Recognizing the need for empowering women employees, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has launched a unique skill training programme for its women Safaimitras, door to door waste collectors, toilet cleaners and B&R workers to augment their income and provide opportunities for them to start alternative careers as well. 

While sharing this information, Sh. Anup Gupta, Mayor, Chandigarh said that a 360 hour special skill training course for a batch of 40 women safai mitras has been launched today on the International Women’s day.

Ms Anindita Mitra, Commissioner Municipal Corporation and Mission Director NULM (National Livlihood Mission), shared that there were a large number of women Safai Mitras and Garbage Collectors working with Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. Though they are already gainfully employed, need is felt to further strengthen their financial position as well as offer them and their families, opportunities of alternative careers as well.

She said that the first batch of 40 women has been launched today, on International Women’s Day and all these women have enrolled themselves for the tailoring course. She further added that these skill development courses which shall include a variety of courses like stitching, making achaar and other items, candle making etc, would now be a constant feature for all women Safai Mitras who wish to enhance their skills. These trainings shall also infuse confidence in these women employees and empower them as well. 

The Mayor further said that this was another affirmative step in the direction of welfare of Municipal Employees and that this comes after the pathbreaking initiative of Municipal Corporation to provide 40 lacs accidental death insurance to each and every employee of Municipal Corporation and the Pink MRF.
